Baby Microbiome 6 Top Tips for New Parents

We have made it easy for you to be sure you are getting your babies microbiome off to a good start.

What is the microbiome of your baby and why is it important?

The microbiome is invisible layers of microbes on our skin and in our body, they are shown to be important for health of our babies and keeping the biome in a good balance is really important.

The microbiome is linked to our immune system and impacts the total overall health of our skin and our body. On our skin they protect us from pathogens, help protect us from uv, help control inflammation and immunity; and later in life, they may even affect the process of ageing.

Often the type of birth and the whether the baby is breastfed or not can alter the microbiome but in most cases this is not something we can change easily and depends on too many other factors, so lets look at what we CAN do.

Tips to ensure a good start for the microbiome

1. Lots of skin to skin contact immediately after the birth but often and plenty during the first year. 2. If you have the chance to breastfeed rather than pump, take it. And with bottle feeding encourage skin to skin contact whilst feeding when you get the chance. 3. Don't give excessive amounts of really long baths, this can strip the beneficial bacteria if done too often. 4. Supplement with probiotics if you think it might be necessary, from the age of one month, specific probiotics can be used, ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice on the best one for your bub. 5. Using oil-based cleansing and moisturising products on the babies skin is beneficial too, as they often don't contain preservatives. 6. Once baby starts solid food, fresh food rather than foods with preservatives.

What about mum?

1. Get your own microbiome strong by eating lots of fresh foods (rather than ones jam-packed with preservatives) and add in prebiotic foods, like bananas and oats.

2. Supplement if necessary with probiotics, check with your pharmacist for ones specifically for new mums.

2. Use skincare that is kind to the skin microbiome, like Something Kind of Wonderful SIGNATURE FACIAL OIL or Good Decision NIGHT FACIAL OIL, by the microbiome kind, vegan and clean beauty skincare brand, theskinbiotic.com.au. These are both perfect for the new mum.
